19 Apr, 2021

Basic Sentence Patterns for Greetings

Reciting from your English textbooks, are you still using "How are you?" "I am fine, thank you. And you?" for daily greetings? Actually, even a simple conversation can have more than one expression. And here are some examples.

Example 1

Amy: Hi, how are you doing?

Bob: I'm fine. How about yourself?

Amy: I'm pretty good. Thanks for asking.

Bob: No problem. So how have you been?

Amy: I've been great. What about you?

Bob: I've been good. I'm in school right now.

Amy: What school do you go to?

Bob: I go to PCC.

Amy: Do you like it there?

Bob: It's okay. It's a really big campus.

Amy: Good luck with school.

Bob: Thank you very much.

Example 2

Amy: How's it going?

Bob: I'm doing well. How about you?

Amy: Never better, thanks.

Bob: So how have you been lately?

Amy: I've actually been pretty good. You?

Bob: I'm actually in school right now.

Amy: Which school do you attend?

Bob: I'm attending PCC right now.

Amy: Are you enjoying it there?

Bob: It's not bad. There are a lot of people there.

Amy: Good luck with that.

Bob: Thanks.

Bad Weather

Example 1

Amy: It's an ugly day today.

Bob: I know. I think it may rain.

Amy: It's the middle of summer, so it shouldn't rain today.

Bob: That would be weird.

Amy: Yeah, especially since it's ninety degrees outside.

Bob: I know, it would be horrible if it rained and it was hot outside.

Amy: Yes, it would be.

Bob: I really wish it wasn't so hot every day.

Amy: Me too. I can't wait until winter.

Bob: I like winter too, but sometimes it gets too cold.

Amy: I'd rather be cold than hot.

Bob: Me too.

Example 2

Amy: It doesn't look very nice outside today.

Bob: You're right. I think it's going to rain later.

Amy: In the middle of the summer, it shouldn't be raining.

Bob: That wouldn't seem right.

Amy: Considering that it's over ninety degrees outside, that would be weird.

Bob: Exactly, it wouldn't be nice if it started raining. It's too hot.

Amy: I know, you're absolutely right.

Bob: I wish it would cool off one day.

Amy: That's how I feel, I want winter to come soon.

Bob: I enjoy the winter, but it gets really cold sometimes.

Amy: I know what you mean, but I'd rather be cold than hot.

Bob: That's exactly how I feel.

Part 2 Nice Day

Example 1

Amy: It's such a nice day.

Bob: Yes, it is.

Amy: It looks like it may rain soon.

Bob: Yes, and I hope that it does.

Amy: Why is that?

Bob: I really love how rain clears the air.

Amy: Me too. It always smells so fresh after it rains.

Bob: Yes, but I love the night air after it rains.

Amy: Really? Why is it?

Bob: Because you can see the stars perfectly.

Amy: I really hope it rains today.

Bob: Yeah, me too.

Example 2

Amy: Isn't it a nice day?

Bob: It really is.

Amy: It seems that it may rain today.

Bob: Hopefully it will.

Amy: How come?

Bob: I like how clear the sky gets after it rains.

Amy: I feel the same way. It smells so good after it rains.

Bob: I especially love the night air when it rains.

Amy: Really? Why?

Bob: The stars look so much closer after it rains.

Amy: I really want it to rain today.

Bob: Yeah, so do I.

Part 3 Weather Change

Example 1

Amy: I really want to go to the beach this weekend.

Bob: That sounds like fun. What's the weather going to be like?

Amy: I heard that it's going to be warm this weekend.

Bob: Is it going to be perfect beach weather?

Amy: I believe so.

Bob: Good. I hope it doesn't cool off this weekend.

Amy: I know. I really want to go to the beach.

Bob: But you know that California weather is really unpredictable.

Amy: You're right. One minute it's hot, and then the next minute it's cold.

Bob: I really wish the weather would just stay the same.

Amy: I do too. That way we can have our activities planned ahead of time.

Bob: Yeah, that would make things a lot easier.

Example 2

Amy: I would like to take a trip to the beach this weekend.

Bob: A trip to the beach would be fun. How is the weather going to be?

Amy: The forecast says that it will be warm on the weekend.

Bob: So do you think it'll be perfect weather for the beach?

Amy: It sounds like it will be.

Bob: I really hope it doesn't get cold.

Amy: That would ruin things, I want to go so badly.

Bob: The weather in California is unpredictable, so you never know.

Amy: That is true. The weather is constantly changing.

Bob: It would be nice if the weather would never change.

Amy: That would be great, then we could plan things sooner.

Bob: True. Predictable weather would make life easier.
