영어로 대화할 때 'get'이 들어간 표현이 자주 쓰이는데, 그 의미를 구분하기 쉽지 않다. 동사 'get'에 어떤 전치사를 쓰느냐에 따라 의미가 달라지는 경우가 많다.

1. Get on with it
I'm running out of time with this project! I just need to get on with it and not worry about doing it perfectly.
기다리거나 망설이지 않고 서둘러서 처리하다.
어떤 일을 서둘러 처리해야 하거나 시간이 얼마 남지 않았을 때 쓰는 표현이다.
2. Get over
That was a bad break up. It took me a long time to get over it.
어려움을 겪은 뒤 회복하다. 보통 어려운 일을 해결했음을 뜻한다.
3. Get (it) over with
I hate exams! I just want to get them over with so I can enjoy my break.
하기는 싫지만 해야 하는 일이나 책무를 끝내 버리고 앞으로의 걱정을 덜다.
4. Get up to
Go upstairs and see what the kids are getting up to.
'to do'와 비슷한 의미로, 무언가를 한다는 뜻이다. 하기 싫은 일인 경우가 많다.
5. Get out of
I'm so glad they hired a babysitter so I got out of looking after my younger sister!
어떤 일을 회피하거나 하는 걸 멈추다. 하기 싫어하는 잃을 피할 때 쓰인다.
6. Get along with
I'm close to my family – I get along with my sister really well.
누군가와 잘 지내다.
7. Get through
She got through her exams without too much trouble.
시험이나 경기에서 성공을 거두다.
8. Get (sth) through (to sb)
I don't seem to be able to get through to (= communicate with) him these days.
상대방이 어떤 일을 이해하거나 믿게 만들다.
9. Get off on sth
Dave likes power - he gets off on it.
He really gets off on being the boss and taking control.
무언가를 좋아하고 열정을 느끼다.
10. Get off with
I heard she got off with him at the party.
영국식 영어에서 비격식 표현으로, 키스 혹은 성관계를 뜻한다. 상대방의 기분을 상하게 할 수도 있으므로 조심해서 사용해야 한다.
11. Get rid of someone
We finally got rid of my little sister by telling her scary stories.
싫어하는 누군가를 쫓아내다.
